This article is a little technical, but describes well the issue of choosing a compromise focus to make best use of your depth of field. Remember however that if you need the subject at the very front of the shot to be crisp (eg a portrait shot), then there is no substitute for focussing absolutely on this point. Hyperfocal focus is not a trick – it is a compromise.
